Formed in Minneapolis in 2015, Willows is an evolving indie-folk ensemble that seamlessly blends acoustic roots with soulful grooves and orchestral elements. The band’s core consists of guitarist and primary composer Colin Peters and Vocalist Jada Brown, whose harmonious voices form the foundation of Willows’ distinctive sound. Jada’s often haunting vocals elicit immediate comparisons to the melancholy tones of Amy Winehouse or Billie Holiday but the power of her performance is equally grounded in the traditions of her Indigenous roots, revealing a cross-cultural depth that’s all her own. Peters’ melodically rich musical beds offer an ideal setting for interplay between his and Jada’s voices highlighted by expertly executed rhythm and string sections.
